Oakboro, NC History

“From a quiet crossroads to a thriving small town, Oakboro has grown alongside the railroad, industry, and community spirit that define its charm today.”

Oakboro’s story begins with the arrival of the railroad in 1913. Before that time, the only signs of a budding community were C.C. Furr’s store and Ellis Thomas’ blacksmith shop. Later that year, the first passenger train rolled through town, stopping at the newly built Furr City depot, marking the start of Oakboro’s transformation.

In 1915, the town was officially incorporated and renamed Oakboro. Early maps show a 320-acre tract, about a mile wide, with Main Street running through the center. Landowners like Furr divided their property into smaller parcels, paving the way for new homes and businesses.

Located at the crossroads of five country roads, Oakboro quickly became a hub for surrounding rural life. Before the railroad, this network of roads—once earning the town the nickname “Five Roads”—was vital for farmers and travelers transporting cotton, lumber, produce, and other goods. With the railroad, these goods could now move faster, and at one point, Oakboro was known for handling more freight between Charlotte and Raleigh than any other small town along the route.

Oakboro History

Early Industry and Growth

For many years, Oakboro remained a small town, gradually adding municipal services, improving roads, and consolidating schools. Businesses and industry began to flourish, particularly in the cotton and textile sectors.

Several cotton gins operated in town, and in 1923, the Oakboro Cotton Mill opened, bringing much-needed jobs. The mill remained active for nearly 50 years before being sold to Tuscarora Yarns, which continues today as the town’s largest employer, providing work for approximately 200 people. Many residents now commute to Albemarle, Concord, Charlotte, and other nearby areas for employment.
